In the depths of the Kodai no Mori the trees grow darker, and the air becomes stifling with rot. In the middle of the ancient wildwood rises the Jobboko Ki, the tree of souls, reviled and revered in equal measure. According to legend it was created by a god jealous of the first tree, but the darkness within the god was passed into its roots.
It consumes whatever it touches, man and beast alike, and their corpses can be seen half-protruding from the tree where the wood has not yet fully consumed them. This gives it a dread aspect, and so the Yasei call it Don’yokuna ki, or the ravenous tree.
A rare, incredibly toxic fungus grows from the roots of the Jobboko, and is favoured of the Kumo assassins. The Yasei loathe their intrusion into their woods, and so conflict between the two clans sometimes bubbles out of skirmishes in the forest depths.
