The burial mound at Sakantera, deep within the woods of the Yasei, seems about three thousand years old. This ancient site is thought to be devoted to the Shin’rei Junrei, whose overgrown visage can be seen on a wooden sculpture in the temple’s center. According to the legends, Junrei was in his gardens when his devotees in the temple were killed, driving him into a killing frenzy that ended with his burial.
The record varies on who or what did the killing. Most accounts attribute it to an evil entity called Gorei, but others suggest that Saion, the Shin’rei of War, or even Hebinomichi was responsible for the initial slaughter and burial. Many legends say that Hebinomichi left the Shin’rei behind following the burial of Junrei near Sakantera.
