In 1545 the ever-important isle of Minatoshima was engulfed by a strange mist and ceased all correspondence with Ikaiguchi. Due to its importance as a main supplier of grain and other resources, the island was plunged into panic. Threatened by potential political and economic ruin, Emperor Yoshimura Mitsuhide called upon his daimyo across the land to gather their samurai for a military expedition. Half a million men were sent across the seas to investigate. Those few who returned were broken, afflicted with madness, barely able to recall who they were.
