Unusually for an event in the ancient legends of Ikaiguchi, the great wave that is central to the myth of the Tragedy of Chinami verifiably occurred: historical sources from both mainland Ikaiguchi and abroad describe a great recession in the ocean, before it pounded the cliffs near what is now the Hātokawa. Seemingly, some settlement was indeed thrust into the depths, since fishermen report seeing spires in the depths on the rare days the Hātokawa is calm.
It is here that history yields to legend. According to the stories, Yonataorei was once a great city upon the cliff, watching over the Hātokawa. In the central temple, the Shin’rei Chinami resided, regarding her people with love and devotion.
But the War came to Yonatorei, in the form of a monster named Mujō. Chinami, unwilling to risk the possibility of Mujo’s survival, cast the entirety of Yonataorei into the depths, with all but two of its inhabitants drowning. Chinami’s grief was absolute, and she cast herself into the ocean, never to return to the surface. The Aranami trace their origin to the Tragedy, building from the wreckage of Yonatorei.
